Tailoring Sabrina Carpenter’s Skirt Suit for The Stephen Colbert Show
At Street Smart Tailoring, some projects stand out not just for their visibility, but for the level of precision, trust, and speed they require. This post kicks off our Special Projects series a behind-the-scenes look at standout tailoring moments where craftsmanship meets culture.
A Concierge Approach, Start to Finish
Our process began with an in-person fitting, where we met directly with Sabrina to take precise measurements and assess the garment’s structure, fabric behavior, and movement on her body. This hands-on approach is essential to how we work, especially for high-profile appearances where fit, comfort, and timing are non-negotiable.
The suit itself featured delicate fur detailing at the shoulders and required a thoughtful balance between reshaping the silhouette and preserving the original design intent.
The Tailoring Details
Each alteration was executed with intention and technical care. Below are the specific changes made all of which are documented in the accompanying photos.
Tapered jacket sleeves to create a cleaner, more elongated line through the arms
Closed bust for a more secure and polished fit on camera
Brought in jacket shoulders while keeping the fur flushed across the shoulder, maintaining the integrity and symmetry of the fur detailing
Tapered the jacket armhole & removed the jacket sleeves to reattach after tapering, allowing for mobility without excess fabric
Tapered the jacket waist/hips to refine the silhouette while keeping the jacket balanced
Shortened the skirt to achieve the ideal proportion for both stage presence and movement
Several of these adjustments required partial deconstruction of the jacket, particularly at the shoulders and armholes before carefully rebuilding the garment so that the final result felt seamless and intentional.
A 24-Hour Turnaround
With Sabrina’s Colbert appearance scheduled for the following day, timing was critical. After the fitting, our team completed all alterations and delivered the finished suit next day, ready for camera, lights, and live television.
This kind of turnaround is only possible with experience, planning, and a deep understanding of garment construction — especially when working with specialty materials like fur and structured tailoring.
